Angelina Jolie, who is an Academy Award-winning actress, was born in Los Angeles the daughter of American actor John Voight and Marcheline Bertrand. From the time of her birth, it would seem she was destined toward the silver screen. Her godmother is Jacqueline Bisset and her godfather is Maximilian Schell. Rumor has it that her parents intentionally gave her the name Angelina Jolie Voight so that she could use Jolie as a ‘stage’ name later in life if she so chose. And that, of course, is exactly what she has done. She would later have her name legally changed to just Angelina Jolie after becoming estranged with her father.
At the age of 11, she began attending the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and later attended Beverly Hills High School. For a while, she also attended the film school at NYU. During her early career, Jolie was a fashion model in both Europe and the U.S. For a brief period of time her career also included appearances in several music videos. Her first major film role was in 1995 in Hackers, followed by Gia in 1998; the role for which she won a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Although she did not win, she was also nominated for an Emmy. For a while it would seem as though her young career was running out of steam after such a quick start; however, she rebounded in 1999, co-starring in The Bone Collector with Denzel Washington. Future films included Girl, Interrupted and the very successful Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. This film was followed by two box office flops; however, her own performances were so good that she quickly became one of the most in-demand actresses in Hollywood. Mr. & Mrs. Smith opened in the Number 1 position at the box-office in the summer of 2005.
Of late, Jolie has become almost as well known for her humanitarian work as her film work. She became a Goodwill Ambassador in 2001 and has since traveled around the world, visiting areas stricken by war and natural disasters, particularly those where children are involved.
Ms. Jolie was formerly married to British Actor Johnny Lee Miller as well as American actor Billy Bob Thornton. Although there were heated rumors that Jolie had an affair with co-star Brad Pitt during the filming of Mr.& Mrs. Smith, the two vehemently died it. After Pitt separated and later divorced from his wife Jennifer Anniston, rumors continued to heat up regarding a romantic relationship between the pair.
Jolie is the mother of Maddox, who she adopted from Cambodia in 2002 and Zahara, adopted from Ethiopia in 2005. In January of 2006, a request to legally change the children’s last names to Jolie-Pitt was approved by a California judge. In May of 2006, Jolie gave birth to her first natural child, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt.
